Tineke Postma has emerged as one of the promising European saxophonists with a trio of recordings for the 215 Music label, followed by her first concert DVD, videotaped at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Doubling on alto and soprano saxophone, her writing and playing is influenced by a number of post-bop stylists, particularly Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson. She starts on soprano with the high energy "Summersong," a furious post-bop vehicle that is an excellent showcase for her and pianist Rob van Bavel, while her loping, bittersweet "Firenze" adds guest trombonist Ilja Reijngoud.Postma switches to alto for the haunting ballad "Song for Sea-Tee" and the sole standard of the evening, a heartfelt duet with van Bavel, "Goodbye" (long a sign-off theme for the late Benny Goodman). Guitarist Martijn van Itersen, bassist Jeroen Vierdag and drummer Marcel Serierse make up the rest of the group, all of whom contribute strong support. Well photographed and edited with excellent audio, Live in Amsterdam will be of great interest to many jazz fans and will prove to be an eye opener for those who overlook what is happening in Europe.
