Tom Cat Blake has been playing the guitar and singing the blues over 30 years. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on the banks of the mighty Mississippi river in 1962. He heard his first records of Hank Williams, Elvis and Big Bill Broonzy from his grandfather, Randy Blake (famous Country and Western D. J. of the 1940's, and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee). St. Louis is a blues town and soon young Tom Cat was learning from the legendary Henry Townsend. Tom Cat worked a while with Henry and with his blessing, started out on his own blues journey. Tom Cat was heavily influenced by the roots music of the 40's and 50's, especially Rhythm and Blues. Following in the paths of all the great blues men before him, Tom Cat decided to ramble. He travelled the USA, finally settling in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Tampa Bay is a blues rich area and soon Tom Cat was gigging and recording with Diamond Teeth Mary, Rock Bottom and the Cutaways, The Go-Devils and many others. Tom Cat Blake and the Swinging Gates was the premier jump blues band on Florida's west coast for several years, winning a regional award with Rock Bottom for best blues band in 1993.
They opened shows for Robert Cray, Johnny Winter, Jeff Healey and Little Milton among others as well as gigging regionally in all the bars, clubs, honky tonks and juke joints. Tom Cat also toured internationally several times in Scandinavia, Switzerland and France. Ending up moving to France in 1993, he criss-crossed that continent for several years, playing with his band, "The Spanish Cows", and released an album "I've Been Wondering" on the Belgian Double Trouble label in 1997.
He moved back to Florida with his family in 1999, Tom Cat has worked with "The Gumbo Boogie Band", and has recorded with "Woodlawn Fats and his Worthless Bums of Rhythm" and with Sandy Atkinson. He now resides in rural France with his lovely wife Anne, his two children and four cats. Still bringing his special style to the clubs and concert halls of Europe and recently recording an album with extraordinary harmonica man and long time friend, Mike Shannon, the 2008 release " What you're looking for". Tom Cat Blake is not only a fine musician but has earned his reputation as a torrid performer. Playing festivals, clubs, anywhere people want good honest blues with a beat, Tom Cat Blake will "lay it on you!"
