Taking in some of Washington's best-known pop songs ("What a Difference a Day Makes"), the disc touches on her excellent Fats Waller ("Keepin' out of Mischief Now") and Bessie Smith ("Backwater Blues") songbooks, while also including something from a fiery live date with Clifford Brown ("I've Got You Under My Skin"). And this is not to forget a handful of finely gauged readings of such perennials as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Easy Living," and "I Could Write a Book." Topped off with fine support by a bevy of top players, Compact Jazz: Dinah Washington makes for the ideal introductory disc. ~ Stephen Cook Dinah Washington is considered a hugely influential singer to later stars such as Nancy Wilson and Aretha Franklin. The 'Queen of the Blues' is most remembered today for "Mad About The Boy", and "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes!", which won her a Grammy in 1959. She had began singing as a teenager, and gradually established herself as one of the most popular blues, R&B and jazz vocalists of the era. Her success brought her plenty of wealth, and she became known as a big spender on luxurious fur coats, cars, jewellery, drink and drugs. She also managed to squeeze an impressive eight marriages into her life, before a premature death at the age of 39 from an accidental overdose of sleeping pills. ==Download== //
