I’ll admit that before last week I had only heard of Dan Adam’s but hadn’t actually heard him. I saw some buzz about his new album, “Live Oaks & Lights”, come across our Twitter feed and decided to bite… and I’m glad I did.
When an artist who has put a lot of time in the song writing and publishing industry puts out an album, the expectations for it are elevated; and Adams comes through. The album starts with the title track “Under the Live Oaks and Lights. It’s a soft, love ballad, that paints a picture of an outdoor, summer night in Texas with loved ones, dancing, drinking, and beautiful scenery. It then transitions in to one of our favorite tracks on the album, “A Little More Yesterday”. It’s a song about “locking the world away” and rekindling a love that has fallen into complacency. It’s catchy, well written, and has an easy-to-relate to message. From there the album goes covers heart break: “Sounds of a Heart Breaking”& “This is How it Ends”, love: “Pretty Little Lonely” & “The Right One Wrong” and indulgence “Home is Where the Bar is” and “When the Whiskey Starts”. One thing that really stands out about this album is the range in sound; you never know what’s coming next. Adams will go from a gloomy duet that tears at your heartstrings: “This is How it Ends” and then turn around with a bluesy, toe-tapper, about grit: “Bring Enough Gun”. It’s makes the album fun and puts the listener at the edge of the seat.
Our Pick of the album is “Straight Whiskey and Bent Strings”. It details how life presents you with some hard times, and the only things that’s reliable in a musician’s life are an “old guitar and a bottle of Crown.” The message is dark but the tempo keeps it on the friendly side. It does an excellent job in conveying emotion; it’s the song you want to wail to on your ride home from the bar. It is definitely one our picks for a single, as well, as “A Little More Yesterday”.
Overall, the album is great from start to finish. You get everything: singer/songwriter, blues, upbeat and fun, slow and sad, drink in the dark, and go out and enjoy the day. If you’ve never heard of him, check out “A Little More Yesterday”, “Straight Whiskey & Bent Strings”, and “Under the Live Oaks and Lights”, then see if you don’t want to buy the whole album. Check it out, it’s worth the purchase.
