Gifted Saxophonist Stephen Richard is emerging as one of today's up and coming Jazz musicians. Stephen's clean, soulful styling punctuated with dazzling solo flourishes are the result of his unique interpretation of many forms of music encountered throughout his life.
Currently Stephen leads his own band in the city of Houston, he's performed at the Red Cat Jazz Cafe, Ce'zanne’s, Sambuca Jazz Cafe, Sweet Lorraine's Jazz Club, Houston International Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Beaumont Jazz Festival, Corpus Christi Jazz Festival, Jones Hall, the Verizon Wireless Theatre, the Arena Theatre, Ovations, Suga's, and 57 West Jazz Cafe just to mention a few. Stephen brings soul, integrity and sensitivity to music, something that's sorely missed.
In such a short time Stephen has played in a number of musical ensembles from The Summer Jazz Workshop to the Young Sounds of Houston. Stephen has had the privilege to play with the likes of Ernie Watts, Ellis Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Norman Brown, Boney James, Frank Lacey and Wes Anderson. Stephen has opened for Joe Sample, Chuck Mangione and Stanley Turrentine.
Stephen attended Southern University in Baton Rouge Louisiana on a music scholarship where he majored and received his BA in Communications. It was in college under the guidance of Mr. Alvin Batiste when Stephen's musical knowledge really began to expand. It was with Mr. Batiste that Stephen received an invitation to France to teach Jazz at the University of Paris as a Jazz Ambassador. While in college Stephen had the opportunity to play for Mr. Nelson Mandela and visited Bermuda to play for the Premiere.
A performance by his high school's stage band would greatly influence his interest in improvisation and melody. By his sophomore year Stephen's career direction took shape during a sound check by the late Grover Washington Jr. who allowed him to sit in with his band. Stephen says "it was on stage at the sound check playing with Mr. Washington when I had an epiphany that this is what I was supposed to do." On his final visit to Houston Mr. Washington featured Stephen, inviting him to the stage to play with him.
Jazz at it's finest. Look no further, you will play this CD from beginning to end without skipping a tune. This independent release is definitely in the same league as the majors and shines with it's all star lineup of musicians. From funk, soul, straight ahead to ballads Stephen Richard's Circa 79 will satisfy anyone's musical taste.
Richard penned 6 of the 10 tunes on the CD, the four he didn't write are cover tunes and he's credited as an arranger for those. The CD opens with Everybody Loves the Sunshine a Roy Ayers classic, this tune showcases the bands groove and their ability to cover a song, make it their own without dissapointing the original. The CD closes with an original composition from Richard, it's a burner featuring Downbeats 2009 Flutist of the Year Hubert Laws.
