Initiated by Leo Tardin, first prize winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival International Piano Solo Competition, Grand Pianoramax is an all-live keyboards/drums duo with occasional guests MCs/vocalists blending Minimoog-synth bass, syncopated keys, organic drumming and freestyle spoken words improv/slam.
Taking full advantage of this minimal and flexible set-up, Leo Tardin took up the challenge of developing hybrid stylistic directions in their most essential renditions by inviting first-class drummers such as Adam Deitch, Deantoni Parks, live drum'n'bass pioneer Jojo Mayer or NYC Bowery Poetry Club wizard Celena Glenn (Coco Rosie, Bunny Rabbit).
Starlite, the first Grand Pianoramax single, remixed by Nuspirit Helsinki and Domu was released in 2004 and regularly appeared on the playlists of Mr Scruff, Rainer TrГјby, Osunlade, Laurent Garnier, Patrick Forge as well as on various college radios across the US.
Following the release of Starlite, the first full-length Grand Pianoramax album was recorded in New York with Jojo Mayer and Thelonious Monk institute scholar Ferenc Nemeth. Released worldwide in 2005 by ObliqSound, this self-titled debut album generated enthusiastic reviews from both sides of the Atlantic in key publications including Billboard Magazine, BPM, XLR8R, Vibrations, De:Bug, Jazz Thing. Also available on iTunes, Grand Pianoramax's Tranquille track generated over 43000 downloads on iTunes USA.
Primarily a live project, Leo Tardin performed with Grand Pianoramax at numerous venues including Joes Pub, Jazz Standard, Sirius Satellite Radio, Nublu, Union Hall (New York), Jazz CafГ© (London), Moods (ZГјrich), Le Tryptique (Paris), Galeria ZDB (Lisbon) and at many festivals across Europe.
Appart from his activities with Grand Pianoramax, Leo Tardin performed and/or recorded as pianist with legendary jazz musicians including Roy Ayers, Frank Morgan, Toots Thielemans, Dave Liebman, Enrico Rava and Charles Tolliver.
Leo Tardin also frequently performed with Portuguese singer Paula Oliveira, with whom he recorded a highly successful album of Portuguese traditional and revolution-era songs for Universal Music. This collaboration led to extensive tours throughout Southern Europe and frequent stays in Lisbon, a city he developed a strong fascination for.
He recently was invited to perform in Istanbul with Orient Expressions, a Turkish ensemble mixing traditional music with electronica.
