Italian-born singer-songwriter, pianist, guitarist, is an eclectic, far-reaching artist whose repertoire includes jazz standards, original compositions and arrangements, and interpretations of pop, rock, Latin, Italian and Brazilian songs. A sultry voice, poetic lyrics and surprising harmonies are what has made The International Herald Tribune call her a striking “combination of personality, soulfulness and sophistication.” Born in Rome, Civello started singing professionally as a featured vocalist in the Mario Raja Big Bang, later joining Italian drummer Roberto Gatto and the Noisemakers. In 1993, she moved to Boston with a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, later receiving Boston Jazz Society and Cleo Laine Awards. After moving to NYC, she immersed herself in Latin and Brazilian music and began writing songs which resulted in the acclaimed 2005 release of her debut CD, Last Quarter Moon, prompting Tony Bennett to call her “the best jazz singer of her generation.” She describes her recently released CD, The Space Between, as being “about the space between the notes, the silence between words, the space between me and you, me and my past, me and my future, and all the spaces between that nowadays are so difficult to stop and think about...the space between that makes you feel the reality better, the space that makes you miss someone, the space between that makes you not say everything all at once, but bit by bit, as the need of saying it gets stronger in you. The space between what I think and what I say ... In Italy, we have a saying: Between saying and doing, there is the sea.” The quartet tonight also features Guilherme Monteiro, guitar; Alan Hampton, bass; and Yusuke Yamamoto, drums & percussion.
