It's been almost three years since Justin Rutledge has released his last album, The Early Widows. He has spent the time performing in stage productions like Michael Ondaatje's Divisadero and Max Frisch's The Arsonists.
Now, Rutledge is back with his fifth studio album, Valleyheart.
"With Valleyheart I really wanted to take a very minimal approach," says Rutledge. "There's no way I could recreate that creaky quality of No Never Alone. I didn't want to replicate that but what I did want to do is pay attention to what made that album special."
As a result, there's a lot of space on the new record but not a single lyric or note seems forced. Quite a feat, considering one of the songs is entitled "Kapuskasing Coffee."
The album comes out on Feb. 12, but you can stream the entire record today on CBC Music.
