This CD is full of soulful, swingin' and downhome Blues. I have to sit on my hands when I listen to it because I just wish I had played on every track. The band is beautiful, the guitars traditional, weaving patterns sympathetically around Wallace's beautiful harmonica. Wallace is simply an artist at his peak with sweet majestical tones and lines, emanating from his soulful vocals and beautiful harmonica. Never overplaying or underplaying, laying it down with tone, taste and a perfect understanding of his role. This is a joyful reminiscence for me and Wallace of our love for Robert Jr., my mentor and Blues grandfather. Wallace you and I are carrying the torch - may you continue to be a light unto this world! Love, Ronnie Earl (Ronnie Earl)
Cleveland bluesman Wallace Coleman says the 10 years he spent touring with the late blues legend Robert Jr. Lockwood were the most exciting of his life. On his new album, “Blues in the Wind (Remembering Robert Jr. Lockwood),” Coleman returns the favor.
On “Robert Jr.,” Coleman fondly recalls how Lockwood once pulled him off a stage and told him he didn’t care for harmonica players. Lockwood liked Coleman and gave him a chance, though. Coleman shows why on the album’s 10 songs.
Coleman and his band rumble through “Little Joint Way ‘Cross Town,” a song Coleman penned. They slink through “Blues in the Wind,” another original. But whether the songs are fast or slow, Coleman’s harp is always smooth. So, for that matter, are his vocals.
